Senior Vice President, Generation and Chief Nuclear Officer
Jim Welsch serves as Senior Vice President, Generation and Chief Nuclear Officer (CNO) for Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E). With nearly 40 years of nuclear and energy industry experience, he is responsible for overall strategic direction and leading upwards of 2,000 employees who are focused on the safe, reliable and affordable operation of all sources of PG&E owned generation. He also oversees the company’s power plant decommissioning projects.
Welsch serves as PG&E’s lead contact with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) and is a member of the Nuclear Facilities Decommissioning Master Trust Committee.
Welsch was first hired by PG&E in 1984 and has served in various leadership roles at Diablo Canyon Power Plant prior to his current position. These include Vice President, Nuclear Generation and CNO, Station Director, Operations Services Director, Operations Manager, Operations Shift Manager, Control Room Supervisor and Shift Engineer. Welsch received his Senior Reactor Operator License in 2000, and is a graduate of the INPO Senior Nuclear Executive Seminar and Hudson Institute of Coaching Certification Program.
A native of Danville, Illinois, Welsch holds a B.S. in Nuclear Technology from Regents College New York and served in the United States Nuclear Submarine Service from 1973 to 1979.
